What Is Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free?

Elizabeth Hasselbeck, from The View, has been open in talking about her autoimmune disease, celiac disease, and her gluten-free diet - but what is celiac disease and gluten-free?

Celiac Disease (CD) is a lifelong, digestive disorder affecting children and adults. When people with CD eat foods that contain gluten, it creates an immune-mediated toxic reaction that causes damage to the small intestine and does not allow food to be properly absorbed. Even small amounts of gluten in foods can affect those with CD and cause health problems. Damage can occur to the small bowel even when there are no symptoms present.

Gluten is the common name for the proteins in specific grains that are harmful to persons with celiac disease. These proteins are found in ALL forms of wheat (including durum, semolina, spelt, kamut, einkorn and faro) and related grains rye, barley and triticale and MUST be eliminated.

You can get more information on Celiac disease by continuing here.

I really wanted to embed the video of Elizabeth on Good Morning Amercica, but it won't let me - so to watch Elizabeth talking about the gluten-free diet on GMA, click here.

I suffered from extreme nausea to the point of vomiting every day for more than 3 years. I was fatigued, unable to eat anything but rice cakes and very weak and miserable. After researching online I asked my doctor to give me a blood test for celiacs disease and finally found out what had been the cause of my problems. Since completely eliminating gluten from my diet I feel so much better!!! I rarely get ill, have more energy and am never nauseous anymore! I've been on this gluten free diet more than 2 years now and I really recommend anyone who thinks they may have celiacs to get a blood test, it can change your life!

This was a wonderful article. More and more people are finding out that they are allergic to gluten. I, myself, have CD. It's a tough way to live life, but in the end it is worth the change in your diet. If you think you could be allegic to gluten, don't question it... GET TESTED. It's worth your time, and it's always good to know! Thanks Fit Celeb, Adria www.fittipdaily.com

I'm so glad that more awareness is being made about celiac disease. My dad was diagnosed about a year and a half ago and what a difference everthing makes when doctors finally figure out what is going on! His got so serious that he was hospitialized numerous times. I hope anyone with symptoms goes to get checked. Doctors and reasearchers are finding that this is much more common than first realized. My brother got tested and guess what - yep celiac disease.

I'm another one that was self-diagnosed. I started having symptoms when I was 21. I couldn't get out of bed in the morning without the room spinning (and sometimes falling down), I would spend part of my morning sitting on the bathroom floor because I was so dizzy and nauseous I couldn't move, severe migraines, ab pain, etc. When I finally went to the doctor, he sent me to a neurologist because he couldn't help, the neurologist sent me to a physical therapist because she didn't know what to do and so on. The physical therapist told me she couldn't do anything until the migraines were taken care of. I just kept going around in circles! Finally I started to my own research and started eliminating foods. I noticed on the days I didn't eat wheat I felt better but not great, so I read more and found something called gluten. I had never heard of it before but it made sense. I told my doctor and he sent me to an allergist who then told me I was too young to be a celiac (obviously he had no idea what he was talking about!). I eventually have up on doctors and started eating gluten-free. I've been on a gluten-free diet for 10 years now and have never felt better!

ALLERGIES ARE THE NEW BLACK... *sigh* i have mephastopholitis. it's a debilitating disease where fluids and food items with water in them cause an irritation in my urinary tract systems which makes me pee. whenever i drink water it's only a matter of time before I have to use the bathroom. currently there is no safe cure. the only preventative measure is to avoid all liquids. Side effects of this measure are fatigue, dehydration, and death. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY NEW FOOD ALLERGIES AND DISEASES ALL OF A SUDDEN? For centuries people have been getting old and forgetting things and wandering around. NOW it's alzheimers. Drinking milk makes me poop. Am I lactose intolerant? Or should I just plan to eat my yogurt at home. Children have energy and run around whenever they can. But now that parents are so busy and less patient and children have so many more "sit still" games to play we expect them to be miniature, boring adults and if they're not we say they have ADHD. There are plenty of diseases out there. Do we really need to take normal things that happen to normal people and create a CAUSE for it? Combine that with the fact that we are getting smarter AND weaker as a species and there you have it...everyone on a gluten free bread and water diet until eternity. AND ANOTHER THING! First we had to have antibiotic everything until our systems are so weak that the littlest germs can kill you. (USED to be that samonella would give you diarhea, now it kills you.) so to compensate, there's a sudden wave of PROBIOTICS in food. Come on people. Just stop washing your hands so much and scrubbing everything with bleach. Eat some dirt every once in a while. Buck up weaklings!
