Kybella is manufactured in Westlake Village, CA under the name Kythera Biopharmaceuticals Inc.
Kybella is an exact match to the deoxycholic acid that is produced by your body. Deoxycholic acid that is produced in the body helps absorb fats.
Kybella is a cytolytic drug and when it is injected into human tissue it destroys the cell membrane. When it is administered correctly into submental fat, the fat cells are destroyed. In some cases it can also damage other types of cells like skin cells if it is injected inadvertently into the skin.
According to Dr. Ken Landow, A health care professional should be the only one that performs the Kybella treatments. The patient should be made fully aware and understand the risk that is associated with Kybella prior to any treatment. Kybella has only been approved by the FDA for treating the fat below the chin and it is unknown if it is safe to use outside the chin area.
Kybella is injected into the fatty tissue in the submental area. You could receive up to fifty injections in one treatment session. This is not a one time treatment, you will most likely need to follow up with 5 to 6 treatments spreading each treatment out every 4 weeks. There can be serious side effects when using Kybella, such as nerve damage in the jaw which could result in a facial muscle weakness or an uneven smile. The most common side effects when using Kybella are redness, pain, swelling, bruising and numbness.
Kybella should never be used outside of the chin area or submental area, and should never be administered if you have an infection in or near the where Kybella would be injected.
