The Fall Power Foods You Should Be Eating

Sweet potatoes This Thanksgiving side is high in potassium, which has been found to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke, says Heidi Skolnik M.S., CDN, FACSM, president of Nutrition Conditioning and consulting nutritionist to the School of American Ballet. When eaten with the skin on, they deliver a lot of fiber, too.

Beets Beets tend to be right up there with brussels sprouts on the foods-from-your-childhood-you-won’t-touch list, but it’s time to give them a second chance. For one thing, they’re sweet and tasty. But more important, they’re high in folate, fiber, vitamin C, iron and more. They may even prevent colon cancer, so eat up!

Mushrooms  Try sliced mushrooms next time you’re hunting for a snack, says Marissa Lippert, R.D. One cup is only 15 calories! Plus, they’re high in selenium, a powerful antioxidant, which can help prevent damage caused by pollution and cigarette smoke.

Turkey Choose turkey over prime rib at the holiday buffet this season and you could stave off that winter cold. The white meat is filled with immune-system-boosting nutrients like zinc and B vitamins, says Dr. Pratt. And a five-ounce serving of skinless white meat is only 193 calories.

Get A Flat, Firm Stomach

Forget about the floor! Get the fab abs you desire without hitting the mat, thanks to this move created by Alwyn Cosgrove, owner of Results Fitness in Newhall, California. His theory:

"The abdominals are spinal stabilizers, so they respond better to work done standing versus lying down. On your back, the spine is supported, taking the workload off the abs."

How to do it:

Stand with feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, hands clasped behind head and elbows pointed out to sides. Lift right leg to side, knee bent, thigh parallel to floor. Keeping knee lifted, bend torso to right side, bringing elbow and knee toward each other (as shown). Do 10 reps; switch sides; repeat.

Kate Winslet: "Look at Me Not Being Perfect"

Kate Winslet appears naked in her upcoming film The Reader. She doesn't use a body double and disputes weight-loss claims. What's her secret?

"My mantra is 'keep it simple,' " the five-time Oscar nominee tells the U.K.'s Daily Mail in a new interview, revealing that she cooks at home and she eats anything except pasta –

"It gives me a stomach ache." She's also a Pilates person!

"I have a mat and little hand weights and I do a stomach thing and a bum thing. It's very simple – you barely break into a sweat," she says of practicing to a DVD "on the living room carpet."

"Here's what's so great about it: no one's looking at you, no one's telling you what to do or work harder or anything like that," says Winslet, 33.

"I know it seems slightly tragic but it's my way of exercising in a time-efficient way."
