A cocktail at Pier I is one way to take in the New York summer. But
if you’re feeling starved for fresh air, open sky, and a little thing
called nature, help yourself to this Adventure: a two-day, one-night
camping trip in the Poconos, complete with whitewater rafting, hiking or
biking, and a slew of other feel-good, outdoor activities.
Our getaway begins early in the morning on Saturday, September 24 on
West 43rd Street and 10th Avenue, where we’ll board a bus for the
two-hour journey to the Poconos Mountains. After we settle into our camp
site, you’ll choose an activity for the day: a two-hour mountain biking
trip or a two-hour hike, combined with restorative yoga. With our
appetites worked up, we’ll all head back to the camp site for lunch and
dive into an afternoon of activities, including paintball, sand
volleyball, kickball, and a zipline course. Following an al fresco
dinner feast, we’ll boogie the night away with a bonfire and dance
party. Then it’s into our tents and sleeping bags (you can bring your
own, or take advantage of on-site rentals) for some shuteye. Don’t
forget warm clothes: It can get chilly in the mountains come nightfall.
On Sunday, we’ll rise and shine and head to the Lehigh River for a
guided whitewater rafting trip, which starts at the cascading Glen Onoko
Falls. While the trip is perfect for all skill levels, if you’re not a
rafting aficionado, there’s no expectation to join in: activities from
Saturday will still be available at the campground. After hours of fun
in the sun or on the water, we’ll reconvene for dinner and then get back
on the bus to the Big Apple. You may arrive tuckered out, but your
outdoor Jones will certainly be satisfied… for now.
