Michael Phelps Races for the Most Decorated Olympian Title

Michael Phelps is to many, the “greatest Olympian of all time.” Having earned 8 gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Michael Phelps became the record holder for the most gold medals earned in a single Olympics — previous record holder, American swimmer, Mark Spitz earned 7 gold medals in Munich in the 1972 Olympics. Michael Phelps is currently at a grand total of 17 Olympic medals: six gold and two bronze at Athens in 2004, eight gold at Beijing in 2008, and one so far in London. In this Olympics, Michael Phelps is not only racing to defend his title as “greatest Olympian of all time,” but also racing to become the most decorated Olympian of all time. To achieve this, he must earn two more Olympic medals to surpass the 18 that Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina won over three Olympics, including nine gold Olympic medals. With five more events left in London, Michael Phelps will surely earn the most decorated Olympian title. That is of course, if he doesn’t swim at all like he did in the 400 IM on Saturday night, not even earning a medal (4th place) and losing to friend and #1 competitor Ryan Lochte (1st place.)

Be sure to cheer on Team USA’s very own Michael Phelps as he has these five events left in London, chases the most decorated Olympian title, and tries to make his mark on history, like he did 4 years ago:

- Tuesday, July 31—200-Meter Butterfly (Event Final—2:47 p.m.)

- Tuesday, July 31—4×200-Meter Freestyle Relay (Event Final—3:47 p.m.)

- Thursday, August 2—200-Meter Individual Medley (Event Final—3:16 p.m.)

- Friday, August 3—100-Meter Butterfly (Event Final—2:38 p.m.)

- Saturday, August 4—4×100-Meter Medley Relay (Event Final—3:27 p.m.)
